I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful resource for your Spring-Clean struggles!
Bonnie Shay of Mariposa Organized Living is an organizational wizard who can help you with anything from a pile of family photos that never got sorted to a complete overhaul of your office, closet or pantry. She’s even assisted me in getting my email inbox under control! I recently sat down with Bonnie for some tips on Spring Cleaning.
How did you get into Professional Organizing?
I donated a 3 hour organizing session for my daughter’s high school band raffle. The winner used the 3 hours and hired me for 10 hours more. I had an epiphany when I realized that I was so excited to get up each morning to go work with this client. Conclusion: I am wired to organize.
What do you love most about what you do?
I get people unstuck which allows them to get back to what they really want to be doing in life. I focus and build on my client’s strengths so that they stop berating themselves for not being “organized”.
Would you share 3 tips to get us started in our “Spring Clean”?
- Pretend you are moving every 5 – 7 years so you go through the review and purge effort.
- Start with the easy stuff first. You want to gain momentum and see progress. If you get stumped, move on and come back to it.
- Keep only what you use, love or cannot replace. Donate or toss the rest.
What other ways do you help people create calm in their lives?
My clients feel calmer just from calling me to set up the first appointment because they have taken the first big step towards solving their problems. Then an essential part of my work is to provide my clients with visual peace and calm. When they walk in to a room, it should be inviting to them. When they open a closet or a cabinet, there should be order and white space.
