Radiant Renovations REVEALED!

Last fall, we brought you a sneak peek of this remodel in Northbrook while it was in process. We remodeled the kitchen of this lovely home a couple of years ago. (See Northbrook Kitchen on our Houzz profile.) The homeowners invited us back to remodel the master bath, bedroom, and hall bath. They wanted to remove a giant tub that they didn’t use, expand and upgrade the shower, and create a make-up area on the wall opposite the vanities, all with a new, modern design.

Let’s take a closer look:

We added luxury features such as a radiant heat “warm floor” and contemporary dark grey porcelain tile to this spa-experience master bathroom. A Kallista body spray shower with Kohler showerhead, and digital interface, and Kallista handshower all have a sparkling nickel finish. The shower gleams with Maximum Premium White from TransCeramica porcelain slab marbled with soft silver grains.

The sink vanity continues the bright modern design with Wood-Mode slab panel cabinets in high gloss Nordic White topped with Difiniti Torano quartz countertops. Beautiful nickel silver wall sconces integrate seamlessly with the cabinet-to-ceiling mirrors. A private water closet with a Kohler one-piece tankless toilet has a touchscreen remote with all the latest cutting-edge technology.

The old tub area now boasts a gorgeous makeup vanity with cabinetry and countertops that matches the sink vanity. Separated from the sink vanity by large shower, it offers a balance of privacy and shared space for the couple as they get ready for the day. An organized linen closet keeps necessities close at hand.

The bedroom remodel evokes the softer, relaxed side of modern design. A dreamy Kravet Langhorne California King bed is framed by custom designed floating nightstands and chrome wall sconces, along with “floating” shelves in the niche. A comfortable swivel chair and tufted ottoman create an inviting sitting area for reading or looking out the window to complete the master suite retreat.

The full bath in the hallway makes a contemporary statement of light and dark. Tub to ceiling champagne glass tile and high gloss dark chocolate cabinets topped with Verde Peacock Extra granite countertops is offset by a white sink, tub, toilet, and porcelain tile floor. Beautiful aqua Thibaut Como Silk wall paper lines the walls (that’s actually vinyl!) for a look that is both modern yet welcoming.

It was wonderful to work with Michael Menn and team on the construction, Diane Lawson of Better Kitchens on the cabinetry, and our amazing repeat clients! You can find all the details on the products in this project on our Houzz profile Radiant Renovation project.

Northbrook Master Bath shower and tub

This was a favorite project from last year. We were tasked with changing some but not all of the elements in this bathroom with the goal of updating it and raising the tub. The client’s shower was to stay but they wanted just about everything else new. They wanted to replace their ceramic tile but complement the existing travertine in the shower.

We created a raised tub with a tiled surround which features a decorative inset that continues the feeling of flowing water from the client’s glass artwork. We also added lighted mirrors and custom vanities, each tailored to its user. Her side has a large sink and a generous drawer for makeup, plus space for towel storage, the vanity on his side is a little taller and has minimal drawer storage. We selected a travertine look-alike quartz for the countertops and the tub deck to unify the space. The client also had lighting controls updated so one touch of a button sets the scene from full light to a relaxed ambiance. All in all, we transformed a 1980’s bathroom to one that will carry them through many years looking beautiful and functioning with ease.

Perked-Up Powder Room

A powder room that is part of a larger kitchen project was in need of some perking up.  Our challenges for this portion of the project:

  • Small powder room which would only allow for a sink that wasn’t any deeper than 17″ front to back
  • The overall budget for the project is tight, but we needed to update everything except the commode.

    1. приобрести доменное имя для сайта, которое было бы благозвучным;
    2. приобрести надежные онлайн-игры у производителей подобного программного обеспечения;
    3. обучить персонал, который будет работать в службе поддержки игроков.

Here’s the “before” picture:

The room needed some help!

What we did:

  • Substituted a pedestal sink for the unusually shaped sink & shallow vanity
  • Replaced old slate flooring with porcelain penny round tile
  • Removed the large mirror, replacing it with a smaller one over the sink
  • Re-located and replaced the light fixture
  • Added in a wall shelf to hold items normally stored in vanity (as it’s a powder room, no need for a lot of storage)
  • Removed old wallpaper border and painted

Here are some non-professional ( I need to put in that disclaimer!) pictures of the almost-finished room.  It still needs a few accessories.

New look!

    Another view

All told, this update only used up $1,000 of our budget.  The client was thrilled as the room seems larger without the bulk of the vanity,  the shelving is perfectly suited to the room, and the floor looks like high-end designer tile!
More to come on this project as it moves along!

Experts Expound on 2011 Trends

I was recently reading an article featured in a Kitchen and Bath trade publication of an  interview of a panel of the top designers and experts in the kitchen and bath field.  The panel consisted of: Mick deGiulio, Troy Adams, Ellen Cheever, David Alderman and Brenda Bryan.  They were asked for their opinions on the market, what consumers are doing and also what they’re looking for, and I thought I’d share the results with my readers.

According to the panel, people are remodeling and most of them are planning ahead and paying cash (55-68%) instead of financing the projects.  These well-prepared folks are generally in the 40- 55 year old range and are savvy enough to know the kinds of things they’d like their designers to incorporate.  Here is their wisdom on what clients want:

In the Kitchen, people want:

  • A minimalist, but not cold look, with lots of texture
  • Less “bling” and more function
  • Less woodworking details
  • Incorporating technology such as laptops, iPads, smartphones, flat screen TV’s with internet access and a wireless keyboard
  • Warming drawers
  • Refrigerator drawers
  • Dishwasher drawers
  • Induction cooktops
  • LED lighting (good idea!)
  • Quartz counters

    Minimal, but not cold

In the Bath, they’re looking for:

  • A well-organized room with a spa-like feel
  • Steam showers are replacing large tubs
  • Limestone and Travertine as opposed to marble and granite

    Spa-like bath

The “green” movement is also beginning to creep into the wants and needs of clients.  Many still believe that being very eco-friendly isn’t hip, or is too expensive but many are adding some eco-friendly elements to their projects.

All in all, they feel the time is right to begin that project that will make your home more valuable, and a better place to live!

Remodeling- What Makes Sense?

We’re going to take a break from discussing kitchens to talk about remodeling in general.  Now that the weather is turning cooler, you’re spending more time indoors  and will  notice how well (or not) your home functions.  By the time the holidays have passed, you might be thinking it’s time to make a change.  But what changes make sense for your own comfort and for resale purposes?

For resale purposes, updating and increasing the size of kitchens and baths tops the list of getting the highest return for dollar spent on remodeling.  People are also looking for energy efficiency, so new appliances with Energy Star ratings and better insulation for your home will increase your comfort as well as make your home more attractive to potential buyers.

I ran across an interesting article in USA Today’s Green House section that cites a survey taken by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), of its members.  What clients are looking for these days are not rooms like game rooms and home theaters, but specialty rooms that get a lot of use- like home offices, and the incorporation of outdoor elements.  They’re also interested in first floor master bedrooms and energy efficient products, like more efficient furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters.  So when you’re thinking about remodeling- think multi-function as opposed to single function, and consider the energy efficiency of any upgrades you’re considering.

I’ve got my eye on adding a fireplace element to our living/dining room.  It’s a good-sized room with a 12′ ceiling that tends to be chilly in the winter.  We have a wood-burning fireplace downstairs in the lower level, which is nice- but I think I’d really enjoy another fireplace upstairs.  Maybe a modern stove-type of fireplace.  This would definitely add to the cozy factor for the room and there are many out there that are energy efficient.  What is your dream project for your home?
