Take it Outdoors IV

We’ve taken you through planning, hiring various professionals, choosing quality cabinets for your outdoor spaces. It’s time to end our Take it Outdoors series with the final touches: furnishings! Comfortable, beautiful, and functional outdoor spaces need many of the same furnishings as your indoor spaces – just in weatherproof, durable forms. From furniture to carpeting to lighting to décor, you can make your outdoor spaces perfectly appointed to your style and need. Let’s explore some of the options currently trending.

Colors: These cushions from Ballard Designs are a good representation of the popular colors this year – blues, grays and taupes galore with splashes of bright red, yellow green. Classic white and black are plentiful too. If you don’t love the selections that are easily available, you can find tons of outdoor fabrics at Sunbrella for custom pillow and cushion covers. If you choose neutral furniture, you can change out your pillows and cushions to easily update your color scheme.

Seating: Architectural designs, linear strands, classic wicker and iron designs, soft, cozy curves, and modern angles are all on offer. Make your space reflect your personal style. Choose your mix of sofas, chairs, poufs, lounges, and swings to accommodate plenty of seating for relaxing and dining. Here are some cool options:

Durable teak, High-density polyethylene (HDPE), wicker, nylon, cast aluminum, stone, and a variety of woven materials are among the best options for durable, outdoor furniture.

Tables: Dining tables side tables, and coffee tables in all shapes and sizes will make your outdoor spaces functional. Make outdoor “rooms” creating a space with a coffee table and sofas in one area and a dining table and chairs in another, like this image from Ballard Designs with lounge area around a fire pit in the front and a dining table and chairs under a large pergola with drapery.

Carpeting: Choose a natural fiber rug like sisal, a washable, durable polypropylene carpet, a handwoven yarn or many other fibers and styles to match the style of outdoor “room” you are creating. Some rugs are even have antibacterial properties.

Final Touches: Just as you select lighting and décor for your indoor spaces, you can finish your outdoor spaces with all the same touches. Drapery, umbrellas, fire pits, vases, pots, privacy screens, wind chimes, bird feeders and so much more will make your outdoor rooms feel comfortable and look gorgeous. How do you want to use the space? What is your personal style? The sky is the limit!
