Houzz Bathroom Trends

Last week we talked about some of the results of Houzz’ Bathroom Trend report, in which they polled around 1500 users from across the country to find out what trends are shaping choices for bathrooms.  Here are some more trends we’re seeing which can assist you in considering what’s important to you for your remodel or new build.

  • You have a love-hate relationship with tubs.  They’re either eliminated entirely for a larger shower or they become a star in the bathroom in the form of free-standing, flat-bottomed tubs, or deeper soaking tubs.  Gone (for the most part) are the Jacuzzi tubs of old.  Sometimes clients have old tubs that seem to take over the whole room and don’t get me started on the tiled stairs leading to it!

  • Floating vanities are becoming more popular!  I find that you can still have great storage without the heaviness of cabinets sitting on the ground.  This trend also speaks to the tilting towards a more “Modern” design aesthetic.

  • Premium features worth the splurge.  Remodels and new construction always have trade-offs between splurges and saves.  I assist my clients in finding the right balance between getting the best products and also the best look for the investment.  Sometimes we scale back in one place to allow for a to-die-for element somewhere else.  Here are the items that respondents felt were worth the splurge (and I agree);
    • One piece toilets with dual flush and bidet seats -in some respects this choice actually saves money because you don’t need to buy a toilet and bidet and being able to reduce water usage per flush saves on the water bill.
    • Rainfall shower heads and dual showers – many of my clients are taking advantage of these along with body sprays and hand-held wands for a full water experience!
    • Soaking tubs – we touched on this earlier and last week as well.  There are so many fabulous tubs out there that can become focal points of a spectacular bath while allowing you to have a “Calgon take me away!” moment. For those of you too young to get that, google “Calgon, take me away!”

While these trend reports can help guide you in creating the bath of your dreams, professional assistance from designers, contractors and architects are the absolute best way to protect your investment and ensure your dreams don’t become nightmares!

Houzz 2020 Trend Report for Bathrooms

So, what’s the latest and greatest in Bathroom design? Houzz surveyed over 1500 users across the country during the months of June and July this year, and this is what people are saying about what they want in their bathrooms – food for thought if you’re contemplating making a change for yourself in the near future!

  • Style- “Modern” has edged out “Transitional” by about 2%. You might be asking what “Modern” is or afraid that it means sterile and white. “Modern” can be best described by clean lines, but with the warmth of color, texture and sometimes whimsy. Take a look at these:

Believe it or not, the “Farmhouse” style once so popular thanks to Chip and Joanna comes in dead last in the Houzz survey.

  • Almost half of respondents are looking for a relaxing experience in the shower or tub. Incidentally, many are removing tubs altogether for a larger shower. I’ve been seeing that trend for a few years with my clients.
  • Accent walls and lighting are important design elements. I love accent walls, which can be created in a number of ways. From a stellar tile enveloping an entire wall, to an interesting paint color or even mural there are many ways to create a “wow” effect. When it comes to lighting, LED fixtures allow for bright light and low energy consumption, not to mention so many beautiful designs!

Next week we’ll talk about some other trends from the Houzz report!

2017 Fashion Trends to Fashionable Home Décor

From New York to London to Milan to Paris, the Spring 2017 fashion week shows recently marched the latest trends down runways lined with buyers and photographers intent on getting those fabulous new fashions to stores near you. If you follow our facebook page, you’ve seen us post links to our pinterest boards on the hottest styles, patterns, colors, embellishments, and accessories of 2017 over the past couple of weeks. (If you haven’t seen them already, just click to follow the links above.) Now that the shows are all wrapped up, we want to show you how a few of those fashion trends can become fashionable décor for your home.

Color Trends
2017 color trends include red, pinks of every hue, all shades of yellow, metallics, grays, whites and off-whites, and high contrast mixes. The most popular color was blue of every shade, with navy being especially on trend. White, gray, and high contrast has been highly popular in kitchens and other home decor for years and perhaps you already have those color schemes incorporated in your home. Here are some ideas to incorporate a few of the colors we haven’t discussed much in the past.

Navy 2017 Fashion Krizia Navy: This lovely lace covered sheath dress by Krizia is just one of hundreds of navy options on the runways and combined with nearly every color: reds, pinks, orange, black, white, yellows, metallics, and more. With so many color combos available, you can likely work it into your décor. Here are some ideas:

Yellow fashion HermesYellow: This smart office-ready mustard ensemble by Hermes will set your day off in a sunny light. Why not bring some sunshine into your home décor as well? It can be as simple as a pretty yellow floral arrangement and some throw pillows or perhaps a nice new accent chair or sofa.

Pink fashion Emporio ArmaniPink: This hot pink confection by Emporio Armani is certain to turn heads. Pink décor doesn’t have to be relegated to little girls’ rooms. It can bring a comforting feel to a room in a welcoming wallpaper, a barely-there infusion of soft color, or make an unexpected, electric pop with a fuchsia accent chair in a white, gray, or blue room.

Metal Fashion BalmainMetallics: Silver and gold metallics abounded this year, like this sparkling number from Balmain, as well as shiny vinyls reminiscent of the 80s. If you have a modern design style, metals are practically a given but other styles can incorporate metals too. Fixtures and cabinetry hardware are a perfect opportunity to add some shine if that is your goal, as well as endless décor options. Even linen pillows can sport metallic décor with decorative beads and threads.

Patterns: Florals Galore!
The patterns on the 2017 runways were bold and varied, including stripes and checks, paisley and animal prints. But far and away the most prominent trend was the abundance of florals. From head-to-toe matching floral outfits (including boots!), to intricate embroidery and 3D appliqué, and bold to subtle, florals are everywhere. There are lots of ways to work them into your home décor as well.

Gorgeous Spring Fashion from the Runway to Your Home

From the runway right into your home – gorgeous 2015 Spring fashions can grace more than your wardrobe! Check out these fabulous ways to dress your interior spaces in the height of fashion.

Flower Power
PinkFloralLong

Carolina Herrera’s Spring/Summer collection was inspired by the “color code of a flower” and featured bold digitized blooms and geometric patterns that were still distinctly feminine, soft, and flowing. This dining room by Katie Rosenfeld Design as featured in Traditional Home captures the same rose, white, and green palette with bold floral and geometric themes. The walls were papered in “Balata” by Manuel Canovas. The exquisite Hickory Chair seats were upholstered in Stark’s “Bimini Road” in a stunning textured, jewel-toned pattern.

Lovely in Lace
Lace

Another decidedly feminine Spring theme embraces the ethereal look of lace. These lace looks by Chloe and Valentino can be mirrored in any room of your home, like the lace stripes on this chair by Ethan Allen or the soft lace shade on this pendant lamp from Heritage Lace.

Blue and White Rose
BlueFloral6

Soft and classic, this blue and white rose dress by Lela Rose is a look easily duplicated with prints, toile or chinoiserie as in this bathroom by John Jacob Interiors.

Comfortable, Retro and Casual
BlueGingham6

Ginghams, checks and stripes continue both the feminine and geometric Spring themes with a homey, classic twist. This striking yet soft style from Oscar de la Renta’s RTW collection can translate to any interior space. Designer JoAnn Barwick created a similar cozy, casual bedroom featured in Traditional Home using checks, stripes and chinoiserie.

Bold, Playful Colors and Patterns
YellowFloral6

The bold, playful colors and patterns from Spring fashion, like this dress by Lela Rose, can brighten your interior spaces as well. Designer Katherine Shenaman played up the vivid, hand-painted yellow wallpaper in this vintage-meets-modern dining room featured in Traditional Home.

Pantone Spring 2015 Color Lineup
PantoneSpring2015Colors

The simplest way to integrate the latest Spring fashion into your home design this year is to implement colors from Pantone’s Spring color lineup. Soft pastels and warm neutrals are all drawn directly from nature. Pantone’s color choices reflect an “en plein air” and minimalistic theme for a “soothing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.” Perfect for Spring, don’t you think?

  • Celebrating Ceilings
  • Not content to be boring any longer, ceilings in the kitchen are striving to make a statement and to make us look up using artful lighting, bulkheads, coffer ceilings, beams, windows, and classical embellishments. The wood features in this kitchen draw the eye up to a row of clerestory windows for a floating ceiling illusion.

It’s Fashion Week in New York City! Models are strutting down the runways showing off the 2014 spring lines of the best designers in the world. Besides showing up on clothing racks everywhere, you can already see these hot new trends in home décor.

Sleek black set against crisp white is cropping up everywhere, especially in the hip new line by designer Ralph Lauren (click here to see more of his spring line). Black and white room décor is just as popular! You can see this trendy porch and other black and white rooms here.

Black and White

50 shades of gray? At least! Gray is a sophisticated staple of many of the spring lines, like this shiny, body-skimming ensemble by designer Sonia Rykiel. Designing entire rooms in various shades of gray is a growing trend too, like this elegant living room.

grays

You will be seeing lots of sharp, geometric patterns as well as bold color combinations, like this bright orange and navy combo by designer Stella Jean and these chevron embroidered zigzag pillow covers from Pottery Barn.

These sassy, 80s inspired heels with geometric cutouts are one of many such designs in the Balmain spring line by Olivier Rousteing. Furniture and lighting designer David Trubridge a similar theme in his line of cutout pendant lights, like this one.

Did you know that designers work to incorporate the latest advances in healthier living when designing spaces for their clients?  I’m always reading up on the latest ways to incorporate not only environmentally conscious elements, but healthier choices as well.  For instance, here are some ways to incorporate design elements for healthier sleep:

1.  Lighting:  Bedroom lighting should tend towards the warmer (red) end of the color spectrum.  Lighting that tends toward the blue end of the spectrum disrupts the formation of melatonin, a hormone that helps us regulate our sleep and waking patterns.  For instance, if you have a digital clock in your room, switch to one with red LED’s as opposed to blue or green.

2.  Sound:  The addition of sound-reducing materials like carpeting or rugs, window treatments to block light and sound, and solid-core doors help those who are easily disturbed by ambient noise fall asleep and stay asleep.

3. Waves:  The electro-magnetic kind.  The stuff that’s emitted from all of our electronic gear, including cordless phones, cell phones, computers, TV’s,  etc.  Believe it or not, these electro-magnetic waves can be disruptive to good sleep.  Try to keep EMF devices out of the bedroom, or at the very least, far away from you.  I know, this sounds a little “woo-woo”, but there are studies that suggest it’s healthier to keep electronics out of the bedroom.  (Apologies to my nephew Corey, who owns an A-V company and advocates for a TV in every room!)

These are just a few ways to design with health in mind.  In future posts, I’ll explore more ways of enhancing health through design choices!
